Tips For Setting Up A Podcast

At a time when many if not most of us are stuck at home, we turn to ways to find entertainment and keep ourselves occupied. And podcasts have never been bigger than they are right now. So perhaps some of you are considering dipping your toes in the water. If so, as a long-time podcaster, here are some tips for setting up a podcast.

Choose Your Topic Well

There is no point doing a podcast unless you have a topic you are passionate about. Something you are keen to talk about, repeatedly. Podcasts take up time, effort and some money too. Do not commit unless you are prepared to commit resources to it, and want to build your particular show.  Whilst the market is flooded with podcasts right now, there will still always be room for good, original content. But to stand out, you have to be passionate about your chosen topic. If you are, you’re half-way there already.

Work Out Costs

Setting up a podcast does not have to require remortgaging your house. But it still comes with its own costs. The recording you put out needs to be hosted somewhere. You will probably need a website too, though these can be virtually free. Quality of recordings is key too, if you wish to grow your audience. So you need a competent computer, good WIFI, and a microphone and headphones. Plus the recording software, and more. In my opinion you should look to spend £100 at least before you begin to get yourself in a position to produce regular content.

Tips For Setting Up A Podcast – The Power Of Social Media

You need to be ready to push on once that first show goes out. and you need listeners and your time and effort to be worth something. So before you even begin, get active on social media. Get a twitter account set up, for you and for the show itself. Get active on instagram, facebook and more. Consider spending some money on advertising too.

Have A Bank Of Shows Ready

Let’s say your first podcast goes really well – then what? Well you need to seize the moment and get more content out as soon as possible! Making and recording shows takes time, so why not have a number of shows ready to go. Be prepared for success and a demand for what you do, rather than rushing out another show at short notice.

Tips For Setting Up A Podcast – Find Someone Else

A dynamic of a podcast works with two or more people, in my humble opinion. It is harder to keep the attention of listeners when there is a single voice and a single viewpoint. So try and find someone who shares your passion. Someone to bounce off. And someone to share the workload!

Tips For Setting Up A Podcast – Set A Budget – Promotion Etc

This depends on what you want from your podcast and where you see it going. But you may want to consider spending money to make money. Get ahead of the game and get promoting your podcast. On somewhere like facebook you can pay for advertising. And you can target it towards your specific audience. It is something to consider.
