Items Worth Paying Extra For

On this blog site, we talk repeatedly about how to save money and how to make your hard-earned money go as far as possible. But there is another way to look at how you spend your money efficiently. And that is which items it is actually in your interest to splash the cash on. Because the best value for money does not necessarily come from purchasing the cheapest items. We examine items worth paying extra for.

Batteries

Cheap batteries are the ultimate false economy for me. Yet i continue to buy them for some reason, convincing myself that i am saving money. But the good batteries cost more because they last longer. A lot longer. And by purchasing them, you actually save money in the long term. I have bought cheap batteries that can barely power a small clock. They should be avoided at all costs.

Items Worth Paying Extra For – Clothes

You will work this out through trial and error. But the basic argument i am putting forward here is that the  more you pay for clothes, the better quality they tend to be. And thus the longer they last. So they may actually end up being better value than cheap clothes. For example, imagine buying a t-shirt for £10 that lasts a year, so every year to have to buy another £10 t-shirt. Then imagine a top quality t-shirt that costs £50 but lasts 7 years. The latter is better value for money. It actually saves you money in the long-term.

Footwear

I think this is especially true of footwear, as it takes more of a hammering. A good pair of walking boots for example could last for over a decade and be excellent value even if £100 or more seems steep at the time of purchase. You have to look at the wider picture. Of course sometimes we simply don’t have the resources to buy the more expensive options, but it still something worth considering when you are thinking about making a purchase. The best value for money is not always the cheapest item.

Items Worth Paying Extra For – Reliable Vehicles

There are little things in life that drain your wallet than a car that repeatedly develops faults. Now reliability does not automatically mean paying more, but you should always consider paying for reliability. It will actually save you money in the long run. So go for substance over style where possible.

Property

Property can be a financial burden over decades, but you must remember that it is an asset. In modern times, few properties are going to lose value. Quite the opposite in fact. So buy what you can afford and remember that is can be quite the nest egg or investment.

Items Worth Paying Extra For – Mattresses

Remember, if you sleep in your own bed every night, you spend a third of your life lying on your mattress. It is perhaps the most important purchase you can make. So do not skimp when getting one. A good mattress will help you sleep better and is crucial therefore to good health. If you suffer with back problems, then it becomes even more important. And a good mattress will last decades. I bought a memory foam mattress 12 years ago and it feels the same when i lie on it as the day i got it. It cost me £500, but has proven to be an absolute bargain.

Health

We have free health care in the UK of course, but not everything is free. and you cannot put a price on your own health, so never cut corners. Pay for those prescriptions, get the treatments you need whenever you need them and do not worry about cost.
