Reduce The Stress Of Moving Home

As I am about to find out, moving home can be one of the most stressful things in a person’s life. Considering i am currently trying to organise my affairs so i can reduce the pain of the move, i thought it a perfect time to pass on some tips on how to reduce the stress of moving home.

Reduce The Stress Of Moving Home – Start Packing Early!

Write down things you’d like to bring with you, or use a free list app (believe us, you’ll never go back), and start prioritising as soon as you’ve secured your new rental pad.

Pack as many non-essentials as possible ahead of time – books, extra bedding, egg cup collection – so you don’t have to cram everything into a bin liner the day before.

But Not Everything

There are few delights greater than crossing everything off your to-do list ahead of schedule, but don’t live in an empty room for weeks. It’s not fun packing, and it’s even worse unpacking to find your toothpaste.

It’s also a good idea to put together a survival pack containing everything you’ll need when you get to your new place. Obviously, you’ll need a kettle, mug, and teabags, as you’ll be drinking a lot of tea. Consider including phone chargers, munchies, and a device that can play all the music you desire.

Reduce The Stress Of Moving Home – Plan Like A Pro

Aside from that survival gear, maintain some packing discipline. It’s tempting to throw everything together just to make things fit when you’re weary. On the other hand, a box containing jeans, spoons, and your PlayStation 4 merely adds to your workload.

Keep similar items together and identify each box with what’s inside and where it’ll go.

If you’re dismantling and reassembling furniture, number the pieces in the order they’ll be reassembled, and use masking tape to secure nuts, bolts, and screws where they’ll be needed.

Reduce The Stress Of Moving Home – Time To Get Rid

This is a big part of my upcoming mood. It is time to get rid of a lot of my possessions, as they simply serve little or no purpose. So a part of my moving plan will be at least a couple of trips to the tip. I would not call myself a hoarder, but we all have stuff in our homes we do not use, or even look at. So if you have not used anything for at least a couple of years, it is highly likely you never will. Sell it, donate to a charity shop, or bin.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

I do not drive, and my friend has a big van. So you know how this plays out! Schedule some free assistance and give them as much notice as possible so they don’t have an excuse to cancel. If you’re moving out of the family home for the first time, you might be able to get away with loading your belongings into one or two automobiles. I will buy my friends a meal and a few drinks too by way of thanks.

Do The Admin

Investigate which energy and internet providers will supply you with the greatest bargain and get the process started. You’ll want to get those services up and operating as soon as possible in the most cost-effective method possible.
Visit the council website to let them know you’re moving so they can handle your council tax and you can get all the bins and recycling boxes you’ll need.

Change your address with all of the firms and organisations you deal with. You can buy some time by utilising the Royal Mail’s redirection service, but if you own a car, you must notify the DVLA right away or face a £1,000 punishment. Don’t forget to register to vote as well.

Stagger The Move

If you can get your keys before your move in date, or have access to your old place after the exit date, all the better. Don’t heap pressure on yourself by trying to move everything on one day. If you have access to your new home ahead of the move date, take a few things over in advance and take the pressure off.
