How To Work From Home Efficiently – Part 2

In part 1 of how to work from home efficiently, we looked at a few ways home workers can make their days as productive as possible. But there were other ways too that we did not have time to cover. Thus, we thought we would revisit the topic and look at at more ways to make your day efficient. Here’s more ideas on how to work from home efficiently.

How To Work From Home Efficiently – Boundaries

To gain true efficiency working form home, you must set up boundaries. Your space must be treated like a workplace, not a house. Boundaries must be set for kids, pets, and and any human inhabitants! Encourage them to leave you alone while you are working so you remain focused.

Ensure the boundaries are friendly and not forceful. Make sure you stick to them though. A suggestion that may work for you is to erect a sign for the door of your office space that makes clear whether you are working or not.

Clean House, Clean Mind

In an office you may have been able to make a mess and have it cleaned up for you in the past. This is not the case at home, usually. And it is vital that you set up a working environment that you are comfortable. And this involves having a clean environment free of junk and food. It will ensure you remain focused and organised. And thus more productive. Even if you can operate with mess, having piles of paperwork strewn about could result in you misplacing important documents. At the very least it could waste your time trying to locate items.

A cleaning schedule may help you keep on top of things.

How To Work From Home Efficiently – Audio Assistance

An advantage of working by yourself is that you are rid of those common office arguments over what music gets played. So choose what suits you, though  I find I often work quicker when there is silence. But low key music on the background works too, as long as it is not dominating your attention.

Try a few things to find what works best for you.

How To Work From Home Efficiently – Don’t Isolate Yourself

One of the best things about working in an office is the potential for collaboration and socialisation. Only when I worked from home did I realise how important for your mental health regular socialisation is. You need to replace what you lose from your office days. Try to check in with your coworkers at least a couple of times per week. This can be by email, phone, Skype, or even in person. Do not shut yourself off, and try to communicate with others throughout the day. Build new relationships in your business life where possible.

Eat Better?

I discovered an unexpected bonus since I began working from home. Namely, that my diet has improved! With access to my food cupboards and fridge, I found i was no longer popping out for lunch but preparing my own lunch each day with fresh ingredients. I am all the better for it, and better off financially too.
