It seems many of us spend much of our days sat in front of a computer nowadays. I certainly do! But whilst most of us know how to work them, we probably fail to get the full use out of them. There are many ways they can go wrong, but there are also a huge number of ways they can make your life easier. We take a look at how to save time on your computer.
Hopefully you will already know the popular ones. These are in my opinion the following:
CTRL + C = Copy
And – CTRL + X = Cut
CTRL + V = Paste
To re-open a tab you did not mean to close?
CTRL + SHIFT + T on a PC. If you’re on a Mac, then hit CMD + SHIFT + T.
There are many, many more however! Should you wish to get acquainted with them, then check out Microsoft Support or, if you’re a mac user, take a look at Apple Support. With practice you will soon memorise them all.
This may be the biggest time-saver of all. I seem to spend half the day deleting unwanted emails. I promise to unsubscribe, but never do. Or when I do, a whole new raft of emails arrive in their place, because i entered a competition two years’ previous. There is software that can help you delete loads in one go, though some have been banned for not meeting EU laws. But by limiting the emails you receive to just those you want to see, you will save a lot of time in the future.
On Chrome and Firefox browsers you can close your window’s current tab when you middle-click it.
Get a meaning for a word by simply typing in the search bar the word define and then the word in question. Or work out any sum by typing it in the same bar.
I am terrible at this, to be honest. My screen is filled with icons, and i constantly lose time searching for stuff. The truth is that i never click half of the icons on there, but think that one day i may need to. So save yourself time and tidy up your desktop if need be!
Get rid of software you no loner require, or photos, word documents and the rest. Then periodically empty your recycle bin too, as just sending stuff to the bin does not remove it from your computer immediately.
Don’t settle for a slow web browser. Consider a different platform, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. You might find that your browser is slow to load, so try another today.
Set up a diary on your computer so you are well organised. If you are a heavy user of your computer and access a wealth of tabs and screens during a typical day, consider purchasing a second monitor. Organise your passwords, and clean up your bookmarks too. Key ones can be displayed at the top of the screen, rather than having to be searched for in a drop-down list.
